Do you have a little boys birthday party coming up who just loves the famous race car Lightning McQueen. You definitely need a Cars cupcake cake to surprise your child. Creating a Lightning McQueen cupcake design doesn’t take very many cupcake decorating supplies but it gives you an awesome race car look. The most important cake decorating supplies you’ll need are a grass tip #233, frosting bags, and green dye. Also, top the cake with a couple of Disney’s Cars 2 figurines to give it the perfect touch.
First bake 16 cupcakes in whatever cupcake liners you’d like. You can leave the liners exposed for the final look, or you can make a checkered flag wrap to wrap around the bottom of your cupcakes and cake plate. Place 5 cupcakes in the middle, leaving a small space for a birthday sign or a Cars 2 logo, then place the last 11 cupcakes around the middle 5. If there are very large gaps, cut the top of a spare cupcake and cut a slice to cover the hole without it sticking up too high. Just so you are aware, I was designing this cake on an 11.5 inch round cupcake serving plate. You will not have large gaps if you have a larger area to create your cupcake cake. For this you’ll need 6 cupcakes in the middle and 13 on the outer edge.
Mix up a batch of Whipped Vanilla Homemade cupcake frosting and color it with green dye. Generously frost the tops of each cupcake first and then smooth frosting across the gaps. Frosting will drip down through the cracks, but enough will hold to eliminate gaps so the Oreo cookie road will look good. Next cut mini Oreo cookies in half and place them around the top of the cupcakes in two circles creating the edges of the road. Crush up 40 mini Oreo cookies, or about 18 large Oreo cookies and crumble in the middle between the two Oreo circles you created on top of the cupcakes. It is okay to use some other chocolate cookie or cracker like Teddie Grams. Also, don’t be too worried if you spill a little Oreo crumble on the wrong side of the road. It will be covered up really well.
Next mix up a half batch of Buttercream Frosting and color it dark green for the grass. Fill your frosting bag and use the grass tip. Pipe frosting onto the cupcakes along the road by gently pressing the frosting tip on the top of the cupcake and firmly squeezing the bag while pulling up to create long strands of grass. Continue around the entire perimeter of the road. With a small bag of white frosting and a writing tip, preferably #7, draw dashes in the middle of the road to look like the lane divider. Finish the cupcake cake by placing a Lightning McQueen race car on the road with any of his competitors or friends. If you want to make flags, print a black and white checker pattern and then cut strips to tap on two toothpicks. Enjoy!
